POKOTABI / Ryurei Tea Room “SABI”
立礼茶室「然美」
In Kyoto's Gion district, Ryurei Tea Room “SABI” offers a monthly rotating tea and confection pairing course. Featuring spiced infusions, tea cocktails, and thoughtfully chosen artisan tableware, it provides a quiet setting to tune your senses.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Ascending the stairs from the 1 floor of a building in the Gion district reveals a tranquil space set distinctly apart from the bustling streetscape below. Ryurei Tea Room “SABI” adopts the ryūrei style of tea ceremony—where tea is prepared and enjoyed from chairs rather than the floor—exploring the affinity between tea and confections through a contemporary lens. With intimate counter seating best secured by reservation, the course unfolds as a tea master thoughtfully prepares each cup directly before you, inviting guests to watch every measured movement.
At the core of the experience is a pairing course of around 5 servings crafted around the shifting months and seasons. Alongside traditional selections like sencha and thin matcha (usucha), original infusions laced with spices and herbs are poured to accentuate the subtle nuances of confections. The sweets themselves maintain a restrained sweetness—from autumn creations layering figs and chestnuts to lightly tart pastries—leaving an impression shaped by contrasting temperatures and textures across the palate. Toward the end or as a closing touch, Kyoto-style pickles are served to cleanse and reset the palate.
While the experience centers on tea, guests can also select options that substitute portions of the lineup with tea-based cocktails or alcoholic beverages. These pairings preserve the visual cohesion of the course while allowing the aromatic qualities of the tea leaves to interlock neatly with the depth of the spirits. Equal care is evident in the vessels: understated ceramics and glassware by makers such as Toru Kikuchi and Ryuta Fukumura of Nichigetsugama bring quiet character to the open, uncluttered interior.
The tasting spans roughly 1 to 1 and a half hours, paced to allow diners to unhurriedly sit and focus on taste and aroma. Rather than a venue for loud conversation, it is suited to those seeking a calming, sensory-focused pause centered on fine tea and sweets.
